Yucatan Mirror Displacements
ROBERT
SMITHSON, YUCATAN MIRROR DISPLACEMENT, 1969
In 1969 Robert Smithson was given the job of traveling throught the Yucatan Penninsula to speak about ancient land art and write an article for Art Forum. What he did was culturally, artistically, and journalistically incredible ...
The travelogue piece that incurred, “Incidents of Mirror Travel in the Yucatan” suggests a retribution of John Loyd Stephens’ invasive travelogue in 19th c. Smithson's theory, unlike Stephens', suggests – “one is always crossing the horizon, yet it always remains distant.... The distance seem [S] to put restrictions on all forward movement, thus bringing the car to a countless series of standstills” – See article by JenRoberts(1) 0n Jstor: Landscapes of Indifference

Robert Smithson's Partially Buried Woodshed
ROBERT SMITHSON, PARTIALLY BURIED WOODSHED, 1970 (AS IT WAS THEN)
It seems that Rober Smithson's art continues to entropically MOVE - as he wished. As Smithson and Walter Benjamin both agree - time is circular and therefore time is best expressed as a "kaleidoscope of events" ... always moving, and repeating ...
See the Center for Land Use Interpretation's page on this entropic phenomena ... Partially Buried Woodshed ... and below for more info on this historic monument ...

Tombs, Dolmens, & Cairns
Cuween Hill - Earth covered cairn -- tomb?
STONE PAGES ... has many many images and much much info on the ritual stones of Britain & Brittany ...
These tomb-hills were usually first built as dolmens, then stones were piled around and over them creating huge cairns, then earth was used for the final protection and covering. Creating this man made "cave" tomb also helped perserve the contents, including the objects once the large stone was placed over the door!
Robert Smithson - Partially Buried Woodshed, Kent State
University, 1970
The relationship of the Woodshed to an ancient tomb, is important. This peice was created at Kent State - an architypal anti-war university during the Vietnam War days. Was Smithson making a statement about the social construct of the time?
Action to Object - Stonecarin, Brad Birchett, 2006
This is a piece I built from stones collected from 10 water sources in Rappahanock County Virginia. I traveled to these sources with a local friend and we chose about 10 stones from each source. I have set up this cairn at various places in Virginia and Vermont - at times I place an audio piece with the speakers either above or inside the cairn. The audio piece has sounds derived from walking and searching for sites. The bench is also part of the piece - it comes from my family's yard and is from the 1960's. The bench reflects a modern and archetectural use of stones, which gives the piece a historic reference and creates a mirroring effect of time, earth, and man-object.
